Language Arts
The Language Arts Department focuses on improving students’ abilities to read, write, speak, listen and research.
We have a comprehensive vocabulary development program and on-line writing programs. We use both the Scholastic Reading Inventory Test and the STAR test to identify reading programs and to individual reading for each student. At-home reading is enhanced with our Accelerated Reading program. Students who fail an Accelerated Reading Tests or who read a book with no Accelerated Reading Test available may write a book report. Please see your teacher for the appropriate forms.
Reading Charts are required of all students, but may not be turned in late. If a student fails to turn in his/her reading, the points may be made up by reading double on the next reading chart.
Our classes include: Language Arts 7, Language Arts 7H, Language Arts 8, Language Arts 8H, Language Arts 9, and Language Arts 9H
Common Core Information
The Language Arts Department in conjunction with the Reading Department is implementing a new Core Curriculum this year. The curriculum has increased lexiles and text complexities for all reading material. Likewise, the writing assignments require a higher level of complex thinking skills and more complex development patterns than previously. Jordan District has implemented an adapted version of the units created by the Gates Foundation available on the Jordan School District web site and are requiring two benchmark tests per year to insure the quality of education. This more challenging curriculum should better prepare students for college; however, parents may see a fluctuation in students’ GPA as they adjust to the more difficult curriculum.
