Fine Arts
South Jordan Middle School offers the following courses in the visual and performing arts.
This course is an extension of the K-6 Music Core and includes concepts and skills to integrate music into everyday life. Study will include explorations in creating, experiments with singing/playing/reading music, development of analytical and evaluative skills in music listening, investigations of various purposes of music, and inquiry into music’s impact on culture, history, quality of life, and other subject areas. No prerequisite course is required.
In this course, students learn to play orchestral string instruments. No prerequisite course is required. Content is Beginning thru Very Easy music (Grades 0 – 1.5). Content targets: By the end of the school year, students expertly perform 6 major scales by memory, sight-read Grade 1 music with 87% (B+) accuracy, and perform Level.5 music with 100% accuracy.
Students perform in two evening concerts for families and friends, and two school-time performances for peer audiences. The academic grade comprises daily participation points, performance attendance, and out-of-school practice time - not performance skill.
There is no course fee. Non-Violin (Viola, Cello, Bass) school-owned instrument rental is $80.00. Students renting school instruments will likely share use of the instrument with students in other Orchestras. Orchestra II: Concert Orchestra (Intermediate)In this course, students develop performance skills on orchestral string instruments. Prerequisite course is Orchestra I, or audition. Content is Easy thru Medium-Easy (Grades 2 – 3). Content targets: By the end of the school year, students expertly perform 12 major scales in 2 octaves by memory, sight-read Grade 2 music with 87% (B+) accuracy, and perform Grade 3 music with 100% accuracy.
Students perform in two evening concerts during the school year for families and friends, and two school-time performances for peer audiences. The academic grade comprises daily participation points, performance attendance, and out-of-school practice time - not performance skill.

Orchestra III: Sinfonia Orchestra (Advanced)In this course, students further develop performance skills on orchestral string instruments. Prerequisite course is Orchestra II, or audition. Content is Medium-Easy to Medium (Grades 3 – 4). Content targets: By the end of the school year, students expertly perform 12 major scales by memory, sight-read Grade 3 music with 87% (B+) accuracy, and perform Grade 4 music with 100% accuracy.
Students perform in at least two evening concerts and one district orchestra festival. This group also performs several times for peers. Students selected from this group participate in additional performances. The academic grade comprises daily participation points, performance attendance, and out-of-school practice time - not performance skill.

This is an introductory course in theatre, which includes developing acting skills, writing and performing student scripts, and finding meaning in works of theatre through the study and appreciation of theatre as an art form.
Intermediate TheatreThis course continues the study of theatre including an in depth study of acting skills, writing and performing student scripts, and finding meaning in works of theatre through the study and appreciation of theatre as an art form.
This is the required Junior High/Middle School Visual Arts Core course. It is designed to provide an overview of Visual Arts while studying a broad variety of art tools and materials. With an emphasis on studio production, this course is designed to develop higher-level thinking, art-related technology skills, art criticism, art history, and aesthetics. Drawing IThis course focuses on largely black and white (or monochromatic) rendering from life, pictures, masterworks, and imagination. With an emphasis on studio production, this course is designed to develop higher-level thinking, art-related technology skill, art criticism, art history, and aesthetics. CeramicsThis course develops basic skills in the creation of 3D forms and pottery from clays. With an emphasis on studio production, this course is designed to develop higher-level thinking, art-related technology skill, art criticism, art history, and aesthetics.
